Ros-Lehtinen congratulates all who worked so hard to make the Florida Keys Overseas Highway an "All American Road"
October 19, 2009
Monroe County, Florida --- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a senior member of the Florida Congressional Delegation, is “thrilled” that the 100 plus mile stretch of US 1, from Key Largo to Key West, has been designated an All-American Road. The Congresswoman issued the following statement today, Monday, on the great work accomplished by the all volunteer Florida Keys Scenic Corridor Alliance, which includes different Chambers of Commerce throughout the Florida Keys, and other organizations and Keys residents. The Alliance spent two years working on this important designation by the US Department of Transportation.
This is the first “All American Road” designation in Florida and one of only 30 in the entire nation.
“What an honor to have our very own Florida Keys Overseas Highway designated as an All American Road. All of us who have travelled on this stretch of US 1 have always been taken aback by the magnificent and beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, not to mention the history going back to oil baron Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad.
This designation will be good for tourism in Monroe County and it will let all who travel this road know that they are traveling on a historic road like the famed Route 66. The Florida Keys Scenic Corridor Alliance undertook a wonderful endeavor and I know we will all enjoy the fruits of their labor. Thank you!”
