Ros-Lehtinen votes for legislation that provides billions of dollars in federal funds for advancement of solar technology

October 22, 2009

Washington, DC --- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a senior member of the Florida Congressional Delegation, voted today for passage of legislation that would establish a grant source for academic institutions, research agencies, non profits, and businesses that develop new solar technologies. The legislation titled, “Solar Technology Roadmap Act of 2010” was approved by a bipartisan majority.

This legislation would provide billions of dollars in federal monies for schools, research institutions and businesses that develop solar technologies. This federal incentive will help increase the use of solar technology while pushing America into finding sources of alternative fuel.

Over the last few years in my home state of Florida, there has emerged a major market for alternative energy technologies. As renewable use in Florida increases, the goal before us is to harness this technology to benefit not just the environment, but our state’s economy as well. Conservation and improved energy efficiency will reduce costs for consumers and increase productivity for businesses. Investing in solar energy is a down-payment on the future, allowing us to free ourselves from our costly dependence on foreign sources of oil.

Said Ros-Lehtinen, “Florida is the Sunshine State, famous for its pristine beaches, tropical weather and several national and state parks. Our favorable climate not only attracts tourists, but also clean energy businesses that will use natural renewable resources such as solar and wind power.  This legislation will help all those who believe in the power of solar energy and it will bring green jobs to our state.

I am pleased that my colleagues approved this bill and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take it up and help us advance a green agenda that is good for the economy, the environment and for our national security.”
