Abbas’s Decree For The “State of Palestine” Does More To Stoke The Flames Of Tension Than To Move Toward A Peaceful Solution With Israel, Says Ros-Lehtinen

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, now serving as Chairman of the Middle East and South Asia Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding Mahmoud Abbas’s decree changing the name of the Palestinian Authority to the “State of Palestine.” Said Ros-Lehtinen:

“Once again Abu Mazen has sought to further his own political agenda by attempting to change the name of the Palestinian Authority to the ‘State of Palestine’ instead of making a conscious decision to sit down with Israel in an effort to create a real and lasting peace in the region.

This latest ploy, like November’s vote at the UN, does nothing for the Palestinian people but offer them a false hope and demonstrates further that Abu Mazen is no partner for peace.  It does more to stoke the flames of tension than to move toward a peaceful solution with Israel. This, along with his latest overtures to strengthen ties between the PA and Hamas, only reinforces the fact Abu Mazen continues to act against the interests of the Palestinian people by creating roadblocks in the peace process with Israel to further his own malicious political goals.

The Administration must finally accept that Abu Mazen and his cohorts are part of the problem, not part of the solution. I urge Special Envoy David Hale to condemn these recent actions when he meets with Abbas, and send a message to the Palestinian Authority that the U.S. will not send hard earned US taxpayer money to the West Bank or Gaza. We can no longer deal with a Palestinian leadership unwilling to fight corruption or work toward a peaceful resolution with the Jewish State of Israel.”

NOTE: As Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen had placed holds to block U.S. funding to the Palestinian Authority, the West Bank and Gaza.
