Ahead of 25th Anniversary of Terror Attack on Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, Ros-Lehtinen Introduces Resolution in Support of Argentinian Investigation to Bring Israeli Embassy and AMIA Perpetrators to Justice

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R – FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, today introduced H.Res. 201 – Expressing support to the Government of Argentina for its investigation into the terrorist bombing of the Embassy of Israel in Buenos Aires on March 17, 1992. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen was joined in introducing the resolution by Reps. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Eliot Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ted Deutch (D-FL), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and Albio Sires (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“The 25th anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina reminds us of this barbaric and cowardly suicide attack that destroyed the embassy, a Catholic church and a nearby school, leaving 29 people dead – including Israeli diplomats, a Catholic priest, and Argentinian men, women and children. Two years later, in 1994, the AMIA Jewish Community Center was attacked.

In the aftermath, and largely thanks to the investigative work of Argentina’s Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, it has been proven that the Iranian-backed terror group, Hezbollah, was behind these acts of terror, yet none of the perpetrators have been held accountable. We commemorate the 25th anniversary of the embassy bombing by remembering the victims, reaffirming our support for President Macri’s efforts to bring those responsible to justice and offer to assist in whatever way necessary. I thank Ed, Eliot, Ted, Jeff and Albio for joining me in introducing this resolution and I look forward to continuing our efforts in Congress in the pursuit of justice.”

NOTE: In addition to expressing support to the Government of Argentina for its investigation into the terrorist bombing of the Embassy of Israel in Buenos Aires on March 17, 1992, H.Res. 201 commends President Macri for appointing a Special Investigator to examine the July 18, 1994 AMIA terrorist attack that left over 80 people dead. The resolution urges the U.S. government to assist Argentina in any way possible to ensure the individuals responsible are brought to justice and also calls upon responsible nations to work together to combat and defeat international terrorism and its state sponsors, like Iran.
