Florida Delegation Works Together in Bipartisan Effort To Protect Florida Coastline From Seismic Testing

“South Florida is an international tourist destination well known for its beaches, national parks, coral reefs and fisheries which we must work to protect from the detrimental effects of seismic testing.”

Washington, D.C. – Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen joined a bipartisan effort with fellow Florida Representatives to ban seismic testing off Florida's coasts. Seismic testing provides further vulnerability along the coastlines to opportunities for offshore drilling, serving as an imminent threat to local economies and coastal ecosystems, all livelihoods Congress is working to safeguard.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“South Florida is an international tourist destination well known for its beaches, national parks, coral reefs and fisheries which we must work to protect from the detrimental effects of seismic testing. The natural beauty of our coastal communities are a significant part of our local economy and tourist attractions along Florida’s shorelines. Seismic testing is the initial phase for offshore drilling, a step resulting in imminent negative impacts on the coastal environment that we cannot afford. It is our responsibility to aim to preserve Florida’s coastlines to avoid the catastrophic destruction of an oil spill resulting from offshore drilling.”
