Hemisphere Must Condemn Maduro’s Assault on Democratic Order in Venezuela, Says Ros-Lehtinen

“Responsible nations from the Western Hemisphere must finally come together – in solidarity with the Venezuelan people – to condemn these atrocities and suspend Venezuela from the OAS”

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement in response to the Venezuelan Supreme Court declaring that it would take away legislative powers from the duly elected Venezuelan National Assembly. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“I strongly condemn the Venezuelan Supreme Court’s actions – ordered by Nicolas Maduro – which undermine constitutional powers given to the National Assembly. This latest disruption of the democratic order in Venezuela comes after the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed deep concerns about the lack of a true democratic process in Venezuela. We must make sure that the Venezuelan Supreme Court does not take immunity away from members of the National Assembly and cause more arrests and an increase in political prisoners. Responsible nations from the Western Hemisphere must finally come together – in solidarity with the Venezuelan people – to condemn these atrocities and suspend Venezuela from the OAS.”
