HOUSE PASSES BILLS TO ENSURE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE NATIONAL GUARD & RESERVE CAN CONTINUE TO SERVE; ILEANA ALSO VOTES TO PROVIDE VETERANS WITH HARD EARNED BENEFITS

Oct 3, 2013

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a member of the Florida Congressional delegation, is pleased that the House has passed two important bills that would provide funding to pay military reservists on inactive-duty and that would provide an immediate end to delayed veterans benefits.

The Pay Our Guard and Reserve Act will ensure that military reserve personnel who perform inactive-duty training can receive their pay and allowances. This bill will enhance the Pay Our Military Act, recently signed by the President, which allowed members of the Armed Forces, including active duty reserves and the Coast Guard, to be paid during this ongoing government shutdown.

Also passed today with the Congresswoman’s support was the Honoring our Promise to America’s Veterans Act. This bill provides for the immediate availability of funds for the Department of Veterans Affairs. This will provide for services such as veteran’s disability payments, the GI Bill, education training, and VA home loans.

“I will never forget the brave men and women who serve this great nation and keep in their hearts the values of our founding fathers.  Our fighting men and women serve this country and its noble ideals with distinction and we all owe them a debt of gratitude.  My stepson and his wife just transitioned from active duty Marine Corps officers to the Marine Reserves and I know that they will remain critical members of the forces that protect the United States of America. These bills honor and respect the sacrifice of our service men and women, both past and present, and I am glad to have supported their passage in the House” Said Ros-Lehtinen.
