In Meeting With President Santos, Ros-Lehtinen Expresses Opposition to FARC Deal

“FARC members have American blood on their hands and must be prosecuted for what they have done. The United States must keep the FARC on the Foreign Terrorist Organizations list.”

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement after meeting in Washington, DC with the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“During a meeting with President Santos, I expressed my opposition and that of my constituents to the FARC peace process. From the very beginning, I have stated that having the murderous Cuban regime serve as a mediator would be a mistake because the self-serving Castro brothers are not interested in genuine peace but only in leveraging a strengthened and legitimized FARC in Colombia.

“FARC members have American blood on their hands and must be prosecuted for what they have done. The United States must keep the FARC on the Foreign Terrorist Organizations list. I also expressed to President Santos my opposition to allowing FARC members, who have participated in murders and have been important parts of major drug cartels, to run for political office.

“I worry the White House will continue its recent pattern and capitulate to demands that could undermine U.S. security interests in a misguided attempt to advance a flawed accord with the FARC. Many questions remain regarding the agreement’s provisions and U.S. taxpayers cannot be expected to provide additional assistance to Bogota until these serious issues have been adequately addressed.”
