Ros-Lehtinen and Engel Introduce Bipartisan Bill To Designate Street Boris Nemtsov Plaza

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, introduced H. R. 1863, which would designate the street in front of the Russian Embassy the “Boris Nemtsov Plaza,” honoring Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov two years after his death. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced a companion bill in the Senate, S. 459.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “Boris Nemtsov dedicated his life to fighting for democracy and justice for his homeland of Russia and exposing the Putin regime’s human rights violations and corruption. It is his courage and passion for a better Russia that makes him a remarkable leader. As the face of a regime that seems to attempt to eliminate all dissidents, we must send a clear message that Congress is watching and will not tolerate such actions. Renaming the street the ‘Boris Nemtsov Plaza’ honors the incredible efforts of a man who did not stay silent and gave his life for the freedom of his country, and serves as a reminder of the many lives lost in this pursuit.”

Statement by Engel: “Boris Nemtsov was a brave patriot and that's a fact recognized by the Russian people. I'm certain that--one day--Russia will have a government that honors his heroic legacy. Until then, we will commemorate Nemtsov here in our capital city and look forward to the day when his compatriots enjoy the freedoms enshrined in Russia's constitution and in international law.”
