Ros-Lehtinen Statement on Venezuelan High Court Preventing Certain Opposition Deputies From Being Seated

(Washington, DC) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding Venezuela's highest court preventing certain opposition members from being seated. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“The decision by Venezuela’s highest court to prevent certain members of the Venezuelan opposition from being seated in the new National Assembly is a calculated attempt by the Maduro regime to subvert the electoral will of the Venezuelan people. Maduro and his cronies are also attempting to incite violence to impede Tuesday’s inauguration which undermines democratic principles and basic freedoms. I call on the Obama Administration and responsible nations in the Western Hemisphere to unequivocally condemn the Maduro regime’s maneuvering to further destabilize the country and weaken the National Assembly. Maduro is up to his dirty tricks only to hold onto power but we must remain vigilant and apply stringent sanctions to anyone in Maduro’s regime who commits human rights violations.”
