While Fatah Rallies in Gaza and Ties Between Abbas and Hamas Grow Stronger, Ros-Lehtinen Says This is Yet Another Example of Why U.S. Funds Should Not Go To The Palestinian Authority Or Gaza

Jan 4, 2013 Issues: Foreign Affairs

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and South Asia Subcommittee, made the following statement today following an unprecedented rally in Gaza by the Mahmoud Abbas led Fatah party:

It is readily apparent that Abu Mazen is more concerned with warming up to Hamas than negotiating a peaceful settlement with the Jewish State of Israel. The fact that Hamas allowed this Fatah rally in Gaza is another indication that the Palestinian Authority has no plan of reigning in Hamas and other extremist groups and only seeks to enable them.

Ties are growing stronger between Abu Mazen’s Palestinian Authority and the extremists of Hamas, who, just two months ago, launched countless rockets against Israel and its innocent civilian population. The Palestinian Authority must be held accountable for its actions to undermine the peace process. Hard earned U.S. taxpayer dollars must not be used to fund the propagation of hate and violence against our friend and ally, Israel.”

NOTE: As Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen had placed holds to block U.S. funding to the Palestinian Authority, the West Bank and Gaza.
