While Iran Vows to Pursue Uranium Enrichment With ‘More Vigor’, P5+1 Nations Will Be Pacified Jawboning with Iran, Ros-Lehtinen Says
(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, released the following statement today regarding the latest round of P5+1 (the five members of the UN Security Council - China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States - plus Germany) nuclear talks with Iran. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“If the stakes weren’t so dangerously high, this situation would be downright comical. It seems the world has failed to remember the Six-Party Talks that went nowhere and were unable to prevent North Korea from conducting its third nuclear test, and yet here we go again thinking that talks with Iran are going to produce any tangible results.
“We know that Iran and North Korea operate from the same playbook when it comes to dealing with the United States and the international community, using nuke talks as a bargaining chip to gain concessions just for gracing us with their presence at the negotiating table. Yet we never learn. Each time they hint they might be willing to negotiate, the United States trips all over itself in its eagerness to ‘reward’ these thugs while the centrifuges keep on spinning.
“On the eve of another round of P5+1 talks in Almaty, it’s not surprising that Iran has already vowed to pursue its uranium enrichment with ‘more rigor.’ As each day passes, it becomes more and more obvious that the Administration is completely tone deaf when it comes to Iran, as well as North Korea. This strategy of diplomatic niceties, engagement and appeasement has not, and will not, work with these regimes.
“The Administration must fully and vigorously enforce sanctions against Iran and its partners in proliferation. A nuclear Iran is not just an existential threat for our friend and ally, the Jewish democratic State of Israel, but it is a threat to the United States and U.S. national security interests.”
