Abbas Refuses to Negotiate with Israel Without Preconditions, Yet the United States Continues to Provide the PA Assistance Unconditionally, Ros-Lehtinen Says

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding United States continued assistance to the Palestinian Authority and Mahmoud Abbas in the wake of Sweden’s announcement that it intends on reducing aid to the PA unless Abbas returns to the negotiating table. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“The United States should follow the approach of the Swedish government, who yesterday announced it planned on reducing its aid to the PA unless Abbas agrees to negotiate with Israel in good-faith and without preconditions. Abbas continues to refuse to engage in meaningful, constructive peace talks to try to develop a credible solution to this issue, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify sending aid to the intransigent PA. The American taxpayers have sent billions of dollars to the PA over decades without seeing any tangible results. If Abbas has the temerity to continue to demand preconditions for negotiations, the United States must demand preconditions of our own before sending even one more dime to the PA.
