Washington, DC – Statement from Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, regarding the Americans being held hostage by an al-Qaeda-linked group following a terrorist attack on a gas field complex in Algeria.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“It’s troubling and sickening that American citizens are among the hostages from the terrorist attack on a gas field in Algeria. My prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those suffering through this terrible ordeal.

“The perpetrators of this horrid attack must answer for these heinous crimes. The extremists’ goal of spreading fear and hate must not derail the quest for peace in the region. This attack must serve as a tragic reminder that the threat from al-Qaeda has not diminished. Recent events in the region highlight that radical Islamist and extremist organizations linked to al-Qaeda have aggressively expanded their operations in Africa and the Middle East and continue to threaten U.S. security interests.

I strongly urge the Obama Administration, the Algerian government, and all those involved to seek justice for the victims of this vile attack and work on a solution so that the hostages may be allowed to return home safely.”
