Castro’s Release of Prisoners More Smoke and Mirrors from a Decrepit Regime, Says Ros-Lehtinen

“We should recognize this release for the farce that it is and instead work to support Cuban pro-democracy leaders instead of congratulating an empty gesture by a tyrannical regime.”

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R – FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding reports that the Castro regime has stated it will release more than 3,000 prisoners in advance of the Pope’s visit to Cuba. Statement from Ros-Lehtinen:

“While the Castro regime is focusing on the release part of their catch and release program, we should remember many of these prisoners should not have been in jail in the first place. Sadly, the bar has been lowered so low that almost any action by the dictatorship is greeted with joy and applause while ignoring the continued abysmal human rights record. However, reports indicate that those who have dared to stand up to the Castro brothers and have been found guilty of ‘crimes against state security’ will not be released. We should recognize this release for the farce that it is and instead work to support Cuban pro-democracy leaders instead of congratulating an empty gesture by a tyrannical regime. It’s almost a forgone conclusion that before, during, and after the Pope’s visit, more innocent Cubans will be detained by the regime and thrown into Castro’s gulags.”
