With Passage Of Defense Authorization Bill, Ros-Lehtinen Pleased That Important Bipartisan Amendment She Presented To Update Archaic HIV Laws Was Included In Final Legislation

Jun 14, 2013

Washington, DC ---- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) hailed the passage of an amendment she presented that would update discriminatory HIV laws. The HIV amendment was included in the Defense Authorization bill that was approved by the House today.

Ros-Lehtinen’s statement:

“I am very pleased that this important amendment was included in the Defense Authorization Bill. The bipartisan amendment on updating discriminatory HIV laws is essential and would require the Secretary of Defense to inform Congress on what the Department is doing to modernize the laws and regulations regarding our brave men and women in uniform who are HIV positive. The amendment will protect service members and the public, as well as people with HIV, by ending the current disincentive to get tested for HIV and save taxpayer dollars by avoiding unnecessary or inappropriate prosecutions. This amendment will facilitate an understanding of HIV in our Armed Forces. I thank my colleague Congresswoman Barbara Lee for her invaluable assistance in seeing this amendment come to fruition.”
