Ros-Lehtinen Commends Funding of Foreign Policy Priorities in Middle East and Latin America

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding aspects of the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill contained within the Fiscal Year 2017 Omnibus Appropriations bill.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“This year’s appropriations bill includes important and necessary funding for U.S. foreign policy priorities in the Middle East and Latin America. I am pleased to see that funds for democracy programs in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, as well as for engagement in Central America and the Caribbean, were preserved at appropriate levels.

“I am also glad to see that the bill secured stable funding for our allies Israel, Jordan, and Tunisia, as well as a small decrease of Economic Support Funds for our ally Egypt which reflects the current realities on the ground and the backlog of funds in that country. These accounts, among others, are crucial to advancing U.S. security and economic interests in these two important regions and I look forward to overseeing their proper implementation in the coming year.”
