Ros-Lehtinen Statement on Maduro’s Illegitimate Constituent Assembly Vote

“The United States will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and the rightful leaders of the National Assembly, not with the oppressors in Caracas who are denying human rights and undermining democratic principles at all costs.”

(Washington, DC) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding the Maduro regime’s illegitimate Constituent Assembly vote on Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Statement from Ros-Lehtinen:

“The Maduro regime’s illegitimate Constituent Assembly fraudulent election is a power grab designed to circumvent the National Assembly and only reaffirms an unconstitutional interruption of the democratic order in Venezuela. Maduro, with the help of Cuba’s military and security services, has injured, beaten, jailed, and killed the people of Venezuela who are only seeking freedom, justice, and the respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Moving forward, the United States must take more definitive action. First, I welcome the decision by the White House not to recognize the results of these sham elections and I commend Mexico, Colombia, and Panama for agreeing not to recognize the results either. Second, U.S. should continue sanctioning individuals in Maduro’s inner circle but should also expand sanctions against Venezuela’s oil sector and PDVSA who is used by the regime to carryout human rights abuses and incite violence. While the people of Venezuela are without food and medicine, Maduro’s cronies are filling their coffers, evidenced by the hundreds of millions of dollars that have already been blocked by the U.S. Treasury Department this year. Third, the U.S. should prohibit the use of our financial system to be used to provide an economic lifeline to Maduro and his cronies.”

“The United States will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and the rightful leaders of the National Assembly, not with the oppressors in Caracas who are denying human rights and undermining democratic principles at all costs.”
